In our Preschool in Cranleigh, we aim to build Positive Relationships right from the very first stages of registration. This is why we offer a home visit before your child starts with us at Little Hearts Nursery in Cranleigh. We also offer settling in visits prior to their start date, so that they can get used to the environment at a gentle pace.
At Little Hearts Preschool we understand that children develop and are at their most confident when loving and secure relationships support their environment. This is usually provided by a child’s parents or main care giver, but it can also and should be provided by their key person once they attend any Early Years setting.
At our Preschool, a key person will be designated a small group of children with the responsibility to help those children in the group feel safe and cared for. This is a crucial role and is part of the EYFS Statutory Framework. Part of the key person’s role is to respond sensitively to children’s feelings and behaviours and meet the emotional needs by giving reassurance, and supporting the child’s well-being. The key person will also tune into the child’s interests and development stage, so that the best learning opportunities can take place. The key person supports physical needs too, helping with issues like nappy changing, toileting and dressing. That person is a familiar figure who is available as a point of contact for parents and one who builds relationships with the child and parents or carers.
Small groups help to create bonds between the child and the key person in a way that large groups can’t do as effectively. Smaller groups better allow the key person to ‘tune into’ children’s play and their conversations to really get to know the children in the group in a deep and meaningful way. Children feel settled and happy and are more confident to explore and as a result become eager learners.
